Daniel Silverstain, a New York-based designer whose fashion is inspired by architecture, industrial design and futurism, has been named the winner of this year’s Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion.

Silverstain showed his spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection as part of Gen Art Fresh Faces during New York Fashion Week. He also showed his spring collection separately during New York Fashion Week at Shop Studios. He has just completed his second year in business and is working on his fifth collection.

For the Gen Art competition, Silverstain went up against Ada + Nik, a London-based contemporary men’s wear design duo, headed by Ada Zanditon and Nik Thakkar, and House of Cannon by Annie Cannon-Brookes, an Australian label.

Gen Art’s jury was composed of Betsey Johnson, Robert Verdi, Lydia Hearst, George Wayne and Duckie Brown. The panel was led by Gen Art chief executive officer Keri Ingvarsson and the program’s fashion architect/producer Christina Neault.

As the Gen Art Fresh Faces winner, Silverstain will receive a yearlong incubation program that will include includes brand development strategy, mentorship, financial, marketing and sales resources.

Reached for comment, Silverstain told WWD, “Gen Art is such a brand on its own and to attach it to my young brand is very exciting. It will bring all the awareness a young brand needs in this saturated market.” He said he hopes to work on everything from sales and marketing to public relations, financial and business development. “It will help me raise awareness and bring more capital to the brand,” he said.

“Daniel presented a collection that features beautiful intricate detailing, his rich textiles and standout silhouettes, all meticulously executed, created a memorable and exciting collection which feels modern and fresh – he shows tremendous talent,” said Neault.

Silverstain, who was born and raised in Israel, was a former musician and recording artist. He began his career in fashion in 2007 as the visual merchandise director for the Israeli branch of label Keds. In 2009, he moved to New York to complete his studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He has worked at such companies as 3.1 Philip Lim, Calvin Klein Collection and Elie Tahari.

Gen Art launched Fresh Faces in 1995 and among those who have been selected are Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor, Phillip Lim, Duckie Brown and Rodarte. In 2015, Gen Art, acquired by Ingvarsson, revitalized its mission as a talent incubator.
