SAN FRANCISCO (September 25, 2009)—The ever-evolving California Academy of Sciences celebrated an amazing first year in its new building with its second annual Big Bang Gala on September 25, 2009, benefitting Academy research and education programs. San Francisco’s own Chris Issak headlined the party, taking the stage at 10pm in the Academy’s west garden. In the Piazza, SF fixture DJ Nako kept the party going until 1am.
Guests in "green tie" attire got a sneak preview of “Journey to the Stars,” the Academy’s new planetarium show narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, which debuted to the public the following day. As some party-goers mingled with colorful birds and butterflies in the four-story rainforest, others looked on as a diver suited up in scuba gear and a sparkling green bowtie for a late-night plunge into a Philippine coral reef. This year’s Big Bang Gala was co-chaired by Janet McKinley and Susan Oberndorf. Dinner and small bites were provided by McCall Associates, and the butterfly-inspired décor was done by Hartmann Studios.
