Back in November 2004, Frank Warren started a project in New York City. He distributed hundreds of pre-addressed but blank post cards to strangers. On the back of each card were instructions to write down a secret and to mail it in. Frank had no idea exactly how successful his project would be.
The response he received was overwhelming. People not only wrote down their secrets, but created art out of the postcards in order to express their hidden thoughts. Frank posted the secrets he received on his website postsecret.blogspot.com. He began receiving secrets on homemade postcards rather than those he distributed. Since then, Frank has published four post secret books, has an online community, and continues to post a select number of secrets on postsecret.blogspot.com every Sunday.
I have been a PostSecret junkie for years. Though I do own a few of Frank’s books, I mostly enjoy the weekly secret postings online. These postings often have a theme (i.e. the emotions one has toward their father on Father’s Day). Some secrets are hilarious, others extremely sad and some just disgusting. Aside from all these extremes, there are secrets that you may not even realize you had and secrets that you didn’t know someone else shared with you.
Somehow, PostSecret has become an outlet for thousands of people to express their deepest, darkest secrets without feeling judged. Once a week, hundreds of people go onto his website and connect with anonymous artists out there. Frank’s project is a brilliant success and has created a sense of community across the world. Support Frank and visit postsecret.blogspot.com for an artistic treat!
