Mystery Chocolate Drink
Ok, I love smoothies, and there are times when I almost live on them. But in the winter (even in Miami) they aren't always a good idea. Additionally smoothies always have bananas as a base, and in general it's a good idea not to eat any one thing every single day. This is how intolerance and even allergies build up - from over exposure. So I had to figure out a new way to get my Raw Protein, which is a magnificent protein powder by Garden of Life. It's got 14 types of raw, organic sprouts, amino acids, probiotics and, of course, 18 grams of protein. So I decided to put some almond milk (Almond Breeze) in a jar with a scoop of Raw Protein and 1 tbs of sweetened cocoa powder. Shake it up, but it in a bag, and by the time I get to work, it's well mixed and not too cold. Voila!

Don't knock Acupuncture til You Try It!

Did you know traditional Chinese medicine is recognized along with western medicine as the only two true medicines in the world by the World Health Organization (WHO)? It is, and acupuncture, in addition to herbs and potions can be very effective for just about anything that ails you. It's great for pain management, migraines, allergies, asthma, fertility and even losing weight and quitting smoking. Sterile disposable needles are used that are so small, once in, are not felt (If you look closely there are needles all over my body, including in my ears and my scalp). The needles open up meridians, channels and redirect blood flow for desired effect. Acupuncturists can also treat for multiple problems at once. For example, in addition to my regular therapy, she has targeted my left hip which has been bothering me, with extra needles and electric current. Cables are attached to a few key needles running through which feels kind of like a gentle tapping. Acupuncturists must study for 4 years in the US, and 5 in China to be certified. Don't knock it till you try it.
My recommended acupuncturists in Miami: Lori Bell at the Standard Hotel and Dr. Amy Chen on 41st St.

The Healthy Breakfast that Holds You no.1

Isn't it annoying to eat breakfast only to get hungry two hours later? That's what usually happens if you just have quick carbs, like a piece of toast, or a bowl of light cereal, or a small piece of fruit with no nuts. I always add nuts to fruit to make it stick. But sometimes I want cereal, growing up I lived on shredded wheat, Raisin Bran and RIce Krispies, but those don't cut it anymore. I can do better, healthier. Raw. So I'm showing my cereal - which changes depending on what I have on hand. But it starts with Go Raw Live Granola, which is sprouted buckwheat groats, raisins, dates, flax and everything else good. I mix the plain and sweetened varieties together, and add fresh bananas, blueberries or strawberries. In this bowl I added bananas, dried goji berries and pecans. Then I cover with unsweetened Almond Breeze almond milk and a touch of raw honey. Sometimes I even throw in a bit of regular organic granola. This breakfast is not only super-healthy, but it will keep hunger at bay for at least five, if not more, hours. Enjoy and get creative!

I like it Raw

I always get excited when I find new raw food options - even though my diet is probably only about 45% raw food right now. It seems all of the raw bars on the market are sweet and fruity, dried fruits and nuts have a really good shelf life, even without preservatives - and they taste really good. That's certainly the case with the new Love Force bars I found at Apple A Day on Miami Beach. They have many flavors, but because of my cashew and apple allergies I was limited to only two. But those two were quite good as evidenced by the half-eaten Fig Ginger bar here (and it wasn't too sweet). I wolfed down half of it when I realized this would be a great blog. Any of the raw food bars (Lra Bars, Raw Revolution, Pure) make a great snack for yourself or kids and contain only 100% living, raw foods with no bad stuff whatsoever.

The Great Fluoride Debate
The addition of fluoride in America's water supply mid-century may have given us the collective jump on pearly whites that people in the British Isles seem to be lacking. But just because our teeth are cavity-free doesn't mean fluoride is good for us to ingest. In fact many people feel it's downright toxic. Even the FDA is reducing the level deemed safe' for fluoride exposure. According to the Douglass report, and local Miami dentist Dr. Sharp, it was a toxic waste approved for use as rat poison and insecticide. Putting the massive doses in local water supplies was seen as a solution in getting rid of it. Dr. Sharp took matters into his own hands, creating his own line of fluoride-free toothpaste. It's delicious and come in Green Tea flavor, Whitening Mint and a kids Strawberry flavor.

New Book: Secrets of People Who Never Get Sick
We are right in the thick of cold and flu season and everybody seems to have already gotten sick at least once here at the 944 offices. Well, the perfect sick in bed book just came out. Called The Secrets of People Who Never Get Sick', it delves into how those people who never get sick do it. Of course never will this subject be more pertinent than when you're lying in bed ailing. Each chapter is titled with one person's secret to health. The tips run from expected helps like eating garlic, taking probiotics and eating a plant-based diet to less obvious hints like taking cold showers, stretching and napping. While I pride myself on knowing all the best home remedies and preventions, I even learned a thing or two. The only thing I take issue with is the assumption by the author, Gene Stone, that most people get sick once a year. I get 1 to 2 flus and countless colds, even if they're not really bad. What about you?

Pop! Goes Snacking
Not many packaged foods meet my strict standards: no trans fat, no artificial flavors or colors, you get my "Health Freak" picture. So I was excited when I finally tried the much buzzed-about Pop Chips. I mean if Ashton Kutcher is involved (he's the brand's Director of Popular Culture), they must be pretty great. And they are! They will perfectly satisfy any craving for a salty, crunchy snack with minimal collateral damage. Try the Original (salt), Salt & Pepper, Sea Salt & Vinegar, BBQ, Sour Cream and Cheddar. Be advised however, the BBQ, Sour Cream, and Cheddar flavors do have whey (ie. milk) so if you're like me, you'll be sticking to the first three flavors, which is enough to keep me happy to call myself an official PopStar.

Title Natural Sports Drink
Here's another natural sports drink option. Yes, Gatorade did finally come out with a natural version, but this new drink goes further and steps up to the plate -Title Sports Drink. Kind of like Gatorade without all the chemicals, using organic cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, natural coloring and delivering five times the potassium and magnesium. Seems like an easy switch. Terrell Owens and Ronnie Brown are among many professional athletes who already have! Look for it in orange, lemon and berry.

It's Soy Delicious - Candle does double duty
If you're a health freak like me, you probably already know that paraffin candles are bad for you and soy candles are pretty good. Now a new company Soy Delicious (wait, wasn't that the name of my favorite soy ice cream?) has created a product that can be lit as a candle, or used as a body oil. Pretty cool, right. No wonder Kimora Lee has been tweeting her love and the product has been popping up everywhere, including on Kourtney Kardashian's dresser!

Natural Gatorade is Finally Here!
I didn't grow up in Gator country but I did grow up with Gatorade. I used to drink it for sports (field hockey, if you must know), and when I was sick in bed. But at some point, it was banished from my house. Not just for the sugar content, but for the artificial flavorings, the red dye #40 and other irritating colorants too. But then - a mere few years after I stopped buying Gatorade, a natural version appeared - seemingly in the nick of time. G Natural and G2 low calorie have come out in different assorted flavors. G Natural can be found in Blackberry Raspberry, Lemon berry, Orange Citrus. G2 can be found in Berry, Citrus Mango and Orange Pomegranate. Tastes pretty good too!

Hand Sanitizer Trick
Hand sanitizer is good in a pinch, but should not, I repeat, not replace hand washing. Over use of these products destroys the delicate acid mantle that protects your hands from germs in the first place. But there is a very good use for it during these hot, sweaty summer months. Armpit-stink remover. That's right, if you get a little ripe mid day, or want a quick cleanup after work, rub some of this anti-bacterial magic under your arm and, you'll be smelling fresh as a daisy. While this trick works best on women's hairless pits, I imagine men could be helped as well. Giving this a try is especially easy and effective if you're wearing a tank top or other armless shirt.

Is Your Phone Frying Your Brain?
It's about time. Retailers are going to have to post cell phone radiation ratings on the product, in San Francisco at least. For a while now I have been aware that each phone has a SAR level, which is a rating of how much radiation that phone puts out. If you read the literature that comes with your phone very closely, buried deep in the fine print, you can find the SAR number. Generally speaking the more high tech the phone is, the higher the rating. 1.6 is considered very high while the lowest models, like the Samsung Innov8 has .29. Look up your phone at this site
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6602_7-5020357-1.html If you've got a 3G iPhone, I'll save you the trouble: it's 1.38. My Blackberry is even higher at 1.52, which I try to mitigate by using an earpiece, even though some reports say the radiation travels right up. So what does this mean? Well don't freak out too much, just be mindful. Don't sleep with a phone near you, don't wear it on your body all the time and get an antenna for your car. Oh, and don't use cell phones too much while pregnant. Good luck with that!

How does Ozzy do it?
Everyone knows we’re ruled by our DNA, so scientists have decided to try to decode that of Ozzy Osborne to figure out how he has survived extreme substance abuse unscathed (for the most part). Knome, a famous American genomics company, is going to map out the rocker’s DNA to see if there are any clues as to why he has survived 40 years of substance abuse, when so many others wound up six feet under. Although it remains to be seen what would happen to society if we could all drink four bottles of cognac, pass out, wake up and resume partying like nothing happened. Scary indeed!

How not to be....RADIOACTIVE

You stand 8 feet away from the microwave, you never sat too close to the tv, and you don’t make a habit of hanging out under power lines - but you always go to the doctor and get a CT scan when you’ve been having too many headaches or need to make sure that C4 is in the right place. Well, you might want to reconsider that strategy. Excessive scans expose patients to way too much radiation. Apparently medical scans are the single biggest source of radiation for Americans. Because medical records still are not centralized or digital, few patient’s radiation exposure has been tracked by anyone but themselves. If you’re under 40 and have had 5 CT scans you have already been exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation. What to do? Make sure scans are necessary, keep digital records of any scans yourself on a jump drive, and always inquire if an MRI or other non-radioactive test is available. If you already fall into this high-risk category, or want to be on the safe side drink fresh or powdered wheatgrass juice daily, or at least for two weeks after any x-rays or scans. Tests have shown high doses of chlorophyll protects cells from radiation damage.

Get a Glow that really is Healthy! Tanning with Vegetables

Photo Credit: stay in the shade and eat your veggies!
Want that healthy glow? You don’t have to resort to self-tanners, languishing in UV rays or god forbid, the tanning bed. Apparently you can get a nice color from eating specific high-color produce. Carotenoids are the orange color found in plants, and is what gives people who consume them a bit of a tan. In fact, test subjects with fair skin found they had a nice “golden glow” after eating a produce-rich diet for a month as evidenced by before and after photos. So which vegetables do you need to eat? Look for orange and green vegetables like apricots, carrots, peppers, spinach and cantaloupe. Not only will you glow, but your body will thank you.
