The Dodgers free-agent Manny Ramirez has still not signed a contract and spring training is just about here.
Ramirez, 36, wants a long-term 5-6 year contract in order to stay in LA and the Dodgers aren't giving in.
Good for them.
Manny needs to wake up and realize that while he may nit be all that old, in baseball years, he's approaching ancient. Ramirez will be 37 in May, which means he's expecting the Dodgers to keep him until he is 42. Not an age most teams still want to be paying hundreds of millions of dollars for.
Yes, Manny helps bring the team a much-needed postseason boost, but to keep him for that long would not be in the team's best interest.
Getting older means injuries are more likely to occur and the Dodgers wouldn't want to be spending that much money on a guy who may end up sitting on the bench.
So Manny needs to check his pride at the door, take the 2-year $45 million with and option for another year at $60 million, and quit whining or find another team.
It was sweet while it lasted but sometimes when you love someone you have to learn when to let them go.
