The food issue this month has left all our mouth watering for sure, but what are we to do with all those extra calories? As mentioned previously, holiday eating on its own is enough of a hardship to the physique, who needs the added highlight of tempting Marcella’s gnocchi Bolognese or Pure Sushi’s Vegas Roll? Well I know I do darn it! Just because I want to look smokin’ in all the hot new styles from the H&M stores opening in Scottsdale does not mean I’m going to miss out on the delectable new food developments in the Valley.
I’ve got good news though! You can have your cake and eat it too, by simply switching up the gym routine. There are several ways to make your body a fat burning factory by small changes to what you’re already doing. How about that for fitness serving a function?
1. Strength Before Cardio Get the most out of your high calorie burning cardio exercise! Burn up your glycogen stores with 5-10 minutes of fast energy demands from some muscle building strength exercises before getting your cardio routine up and running to make sure all those calories are coming from your… I mean, from fat. ;)
2. Superset it Within the same endurance strength routine, switch up the muscle group so there is no need for rest between sets. You’ll avoid the regeneration of glycogen so you’re burning the most fat and get some high calorie burning cardio out of it too!
3. Variety is the Spice of Life And will keep that bod sizzling by keeping your fitness on the edge of it’s seat with continual challenge. This is why a triathlete have such an amazing physique. Branch away from your favorite routine here and there to get a better-rounded (if you know what I mean) look and a jump in your calories burned too!
4. Functional Fitness This new trend in the health and wellness industry is catching tons of attention from health professionals everywhere because of it’s amazing impact on the core muscles of the body. Instead of isolating muscles, use multiple muscle groups at once to blow your calories burned out of the water and increase your skills at doing stuff you would normally do, like pull or push your own body weight, get out of a chair, balance on one leg, etc. Great exercises for these can go as far back as your middle school floor exercise routine or can incorporate more modern trends like yoga at Bikram Yoga Institute, Pilates at Karve Studio, or indoor rock climbing at Phoenix Rock Gym. You’ll watch your body fat melt off and expose some well sculpted muscle tone while you’re at it.

Thanks for the articles, they help keep me on track :-) Can you follow up with a few ideas for moves?
Hey Noga Coach..I don't live in Phoenix! Can you tell me more about this functional fitness? But not rock climbing, it hurts my fingers..
I am good about exercising but tend to stick to cardio. Do I need to mix it up with some strength training?
Thanks!
Thanks for the inspiration :)
Great questions! Check out this entire workout of functional fitness moves by Noga Coach www.vimeo.com/7250604 for additional ideas. The general idea is to work on your ability to do things you need to do for living like holding or grabbing things above your head (or behind your head for washing your hair), getting up from a chair or the ground, holding some amount of weight away from your body, etc. It's always a great idea to incorporate strength/muscle conditioning into your workout, especially for women since we have so little in the first place. Added muscle mass will increase your calories burned when you're sitting or sleeping and working out, not to mention it also gives a much more defined, shapely appearance. In sum: muscles are miraculous!
Awesome, thanks! Tell me more about functional fitness?
