Fashion legend Donna Karan Previews Pre-Fall 2009 Collection

When designing her current collection, American fashion icon Donna Karan kept a crucial point in mind: the power of classicism, “that doesn't go out of style.” Viewing the fruits of her labour, it is obvious that the flexibility, comfort and elegance she's known for continues into her latest collection. As Karan puts it herself, “Clothes have to be easy.” How easy? “If you can't sleep in it, throw it away . . . it's not only the way it looks, it's the way it feels – this is what luxury is all about.” We might actually consider crawling into bed with the Pre-Fall '09 collection, since a great deal of it is composed of materials such as silk, satin and Cashmere.

Building a wardrobe of “effortless, timeless, seasonless” classics, means each piece has to match every other, no matter the color, according to Karan. Each piece of clothing and accessory is but one piece of a puzzle always changing, it’s all about mixing in order to create one's own style. The foundation for this individual style mosaic? A white shirt and black skirt with the Karan touch- very long sleeves, a high collar and a big silver necklace.

Some highlights from this week's Donna Karan runway show at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco:

Accessories

Large silver and gold “pearls” entwined on wrist and/or around the neck

Colours:

The fall collection features many hues of grey, both light and dark. “We haven’t see grey for a very very long time, it’s refreshing” Karan says. Also making a strong showing: dark blues, browns and burgundy.

Shoulder This

According to Karan, shoulders are the one body part that women are bold about flaunting. “No woman in the world has issues with her shoulders.” Karan's new collection reveals them completely or, at other time grants just a glimpse under very short sleeves.

The Little Brown Belt

Seperates in the collection often appeared with a little brown belt to define the waistline and draw the eye upward.

Sugar Coated

Karan's take on the perfect fall coat is inspired by the 1980’s: big shoulders and very slim, belted waist.

DKNY, what a fantastic brand. I like her threads, not only because they look good, which they do, but mainly because we share the same philosophy on life. Can you imagine what our life would be like if we had to adhere to a 1950's dress code as we poured coffee after coffee down our tie choked throats? Being jacked up and housed in a straight jacket created to look like a 3 piece suit designed with austerity in mind, just doesn't cut it for me. What would I do with all of that bottled up energy? Probably sharpen pencils all day, coming home from the office to pry myself into something more comfortable, like skin tight jeans and a skin tight black polyester t-shirt to match. Then catching my breath to the mysteries of Lawrence Welk as I pounded back extra dry martinis, to the tune of 2 at a time just to unwind. No, Green Acres ain't the place for me. Give me freedom, not confinement. Give me DNKY and creativity.
