Music for the Masses

The guys of Golden State have been quietly revolutionizing the world of modern rock 'n' roll for quite some time, but this year they've decided to turn up the volume. Currently writing with 2005 Grammy producer of the year John Shanks and recording their debut album, the band is known for its anthemic rock music that fuses the classic songwriting of bands like U2 and Radiohead's controversial arrangements. Both riveting and eloquent, their sound is brought to life by lead vocalist and guitarist James Grundler, bassist Alex Parnell, lead guitarist Marc Boggio and drummer Fernando Sanchez. Their music has been featured in various television shows and movies and they've shared the stage with bands like The Bravery and Stone Temple Pilots. Up next? A concert in outer space — or at least that's the band's dream, says Grundler.

944: How long has Golden State been making music?
JAMES GRUNDLER: We've been making music our whole lives. It's only now that you are ready for us.

944: How did you all meet?
JG: At a truck stop outside of Barstow. Unbeknownst to each other, we all had our eyes set on the last aluminum-wrapped hamburger, under the orange glow of the heat lamp. Before you knew it, we all grabbed for it at the same time. And it all started from there.

944: How would you describe your music?
JG: There are three types of music in this world: music to forget, music to remember and then there's Golden State — music for the masses.

944: What are you guys working on right now?
JG: We are currently in the studio completing Golden State's first full-length album.

944: What can we expect from the band's debut album?
JG: Sonically, I think the word we're looking for could quite possibly be "gigantic." It's a heavy ride.

944: When is it set to be released?
JG: It's scheduled for takeoff early summer 2011.

944: Does it have a title yet?
JG: It sure does. Title: Division.

944: Who are the band's biggest musical influences?
JG: The list ranges anywhere from Aphrodite's Child to Ennio Morricone.

944: What would be Golden State's dream location to perform at?
JG: Our mission is to be the first band in space, televised worldwide.

944: After your album is released, what's next?
JG: We'll be going door-to-door, selling encyclopedia subscriptions.
