Spicy Spinstress
Brazzabelle (aka Boots, aka BRITTNEY Marie Bowles), 23
DJ
Why she’s cool: She’s a musical risk taker, putting forth her penchant for mixing underground beats with popular hits while spinning as resident DJ at Voyeur. Plus, she has an impeccable sense of fashion that transcends through the music.
Thoughts on the DJ scene: “The club promoters are great at bringing great talent to San Diego. DJs and bands that you would normally see in LA or New York are coming through town, which is a real treat for San Diegans.”
Fashion Maven
Deanne Shockey, 27
Haven Boutique Owner
Why she’s cool: Her bohemian-glam boutique shares a space with her husband’s nightclub, Voyeur. And although she claims her sense of fashion is a contradiction, it’s anything but. Shockey wears her style confidently and looks flawless doing so.
Thoughts on San Diego nightlife: “San Diego nightlife is definitely growing. When I was in college, it was simple. A couple clubs played top 25 and that’s it. Now, there’s a lot more variety.”
Body Rocker
Chloe Hemmat, 25
Dancer, Clothing Line Owner
Why she’s cool: She’s been dancing since she was a tot and now, Hemmat’s talent is redefining the term “club dancer” by giving patrons at FLUXX a theatrical show, not just another go-go routine. Plus, she’s confident, gorgeous, smart and has a body
to match.
Bet you didn’t know: In addition to performing, Hemmat has a fashion line, Tainted Entropy, which she started two years ago. Her rat-pack, gothic-inspired threads will be making their second debut at the MAGIC fashion trade show this month in Las Vegas.
Craft Cocktail Curator
Ariana Vitale, 32
Mixologist
Why she’s cool: As bar manager at Confidential, she likes to shop at 99 Ranch Market for the freshest ingredients for her cocktails. Many credit Vitale as being the first to introduce mixology to San Diego. She has a culinary approach to cocktails that raises the bar for custom creations.
What’s new: Vitale is launching a new website, bartenderbriefs.com, which will feature a video blog of her travels to different distilleries on the West Coast, and educate folks on the cocktail culture.
Savvy Socialite
Taylor Doms, 24
TheMixster.com Owner/Blogger
Why she’s cool: After realizing that her former employer’s news articles were heavily driven by marketing, Doms took matters into her own hands and started a website dedicated to the local scene. This one-woman-show dares readers to “mix things up” and try something new within San Diego’s eclectic culture of food, music and venues.
Best thing about her gig: “There are a lot of talented people in this city, and highlighting them on my site and giving them the spotlight that they deserve is the most rewarding for me.”
Soaring Song Bird
Erika Davies, 29
Singer
Why she’s cool: This multi-talented indie songstress dedicates her success to all the singers who never got famous or got the credit they deserved. Davies’ vaudevillian, jazzy voice will melt the soul, but if that’s not enough, she also sews and sells clothing on etsy.com. Check out her store, Spicy Toast.
Catch her: Davies’ latest album, Galaxy Lakes, will be available later this summer. But for now, check out her Facebook page and see where she’s performing next.
