Canstruction at CityScape

Canstruction at CityScape

This week, Phoenix's CityScape and its developer RED welcome Canstruction, a national philanthropic competition that challenges citizens and companies to design giant statues solely from canned food.

Last year, the donated cans meant 35,000 pounds of food for St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance and hungry people in the Valley. Across the nation, those
donated cans equaled two million pounds for more than 140 cities. “[Canstruction] is the biggest food drive that St. Mary's gets each year and they do several each month,” says Kristopher Gray, co-chair of the committee for Phoenix Canstruction and marketer for Logan Simpson Design Inc.

With more companies competing than ever, Gray expects donations to exceed 50,000 pounds. The Valley's architecture, engineering and landscaping firms compete, along with the public, to create structures that are worthy of national competition. The panel of judges, comprised of local celebrities and designers, provide awards in categories such as Best Meal and Best Use of Labels. A People's Choice award is given by visitors of the exhibit. The designs will be constructed Saturday, March 5, and are on display until March 12 in the CityScape Tower Lobby.
