A Green Spring

Green is in for Spring 2009.

L.A. Fashion Week started on October 10 with the first show, organized by Gen Art, showcasing all eco-friendly designers, including Velvet Leaf, Brigid Catiis, Popmomo and The Battalion. Hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, whose recent work with environmental organizations has catapulted the actress to an informal representative of the eco-movement, this showcase garnered much attention for the West coast’s biggest week.

And L.A. Fashion Week will come to an end with more green styles being highlighted.

Company Designers and Agents will launch their first Green Market to debut during L.A. Fashion Week, starting on Friday, October 17. With many more eco-friendly designers debuting at the end of the week, the green spring has only just began.

The featured brands at Green Market will include Alabama Denim, a new line that debuted in September of this year and is made of organic cotton and is all hand-sewn. Edun, a line of graphic T-shirts made from organic materials. Also to be showcased are Stewart & Brown, a line by Karen Stewart and Howard Brown. Even though Stewart is a native New Yorker and Brown hails from Montana, the two lovebirds found common ground in sustainable clothing.

But it’s not always easy being green. To be eligible for inclusion in their first Green Market, designers had to prove that no less than 60 percent of their product line was achieved through sustainable practices. Designers and Agents want to assure the public that green clothing is legit and that the standards aren’t going away any time soon.

“We believe that ‘green’ is not a trend but rather a way of life,” says Designers and Agents co-founder Barbara Kramer. “And our green programming has already moved a lot of our vendors and retailers to get onboard. This is our way of challenging everyone we work with to do better, because they can.”

If Los Angeles holds any indication to what’s to come next sunny season, we predict the hippie look will come back again for a second time in 2009.
